Recent developments in genetic sequencing could eventually make one-size-fits-all treatment for serious diseases is becoming a thing of the past. In the last decade, as costs have plummeted and data analysis has become far more sophisticated, researchers and doctors have moved closer to individualized treatment based on each patient’s unique genetic makeup. A diagnosis may no longer be “colon cancer” or “lung cancer” but instead a combination of distinct molecular subtypes so patients get the exact right treatment, at the right time, for their specific disease. This talk will explore what precision medicine is, how it’s being developed and brought into clinical practice, and what makes Pittsburgh uniquely positioned to become a leader in this space.
